Simple Things ~ Brian H. Gent
Leaning on a five-barred gate, The scene is set to ruminate.
A time to think of simple things, Like butterflies with fairy wings.
Far distant hills and whisping clouds, A world away from city crowds.
Dreamy brown-eyed Charolais, While away the sunlit days.
A little lark sings, out of sight, With magic scales of sheer delight.
Lambs that frisk in meadows lush, By sapling, tree and burning bush.
From columbine and buttercup, Bumble bees sweet nectar sup.
Such are the things that fascinate, Just leaning on a five-barred gate.
It is fascinating to just stop and look at what’s around us. The bumblebees must be drinking plenty of nectar on my plot, it’s covered with buttercups at the moment, more work to do.

Jo it certainly is! I have plenty of both on the plot, and keeping a check on the buttercups can be rather time consuming but worth the effort. xx

It does seem to be a ‘good’ year for buttercups. We seem to be inundated by them up here.

Jenny it seems to have a been a good year for lots of things thanks to that long, cold winter! Same here, they’re everywhere! xx

This is lovely; so many things get overlooked when we don’t have time to just stand and see what is around us. Our secondary crop this year is buttercups – our main crop is dandelions. They’re everywhere!!

Griselda I always walk round the plot, camera in hand, and have a good look at everything.
Mine too, I’m glad that I like yellow flowers! xx

Simple things – so true. We need to stop and look at everything that brings us joy. There is a lovely delicately featured white long-haired cat that oftens sits in a window that I pass on my way to work in the mornings. When I see her my day is made!

Doris it’s surprising how something simple like that can have that effect on us! xx

Very nice, Flighty. Simplicity and minimalism seem to be themes flitting in and out of my Google reader recently. Maybe it’s a clue…

Nikki thanks! I’m all for both of those as our lives tend to be far too cluttered. xx

Oh my dearest Flighty!! How I love thee. I REALLY needed that, a poem of such sweetness, beauty and innocence, of such splendid wonder in the little things. My heart and breathing slowed down and I have taken a copy to put on my wall or in my special book.

Carrie don’t tell anyone but you’ll have me blushing saying such kind things!
As you say it’s a really lovely poem, and he also wrote ‘My little friend’

which is a real favourite of mine.
Take care! xx

Sorry to go off piste, but would you tell me what the delightful flowers are in your banner picture Mr F ?
With the rain pouring in buckets outside as I write, the last thing I fancy doing is leaning on a five bar gate and ruminating. If you do put all your weight on the gate, ensure it is in good repair!

Great poem Flighty, I’ve been communing with nature quite a bit recently on the Pennine Way, not leaning on a gate though more bent double gasping for air!

Damo so I read on your blog, and I hope that you have now recovered! Cheers!

You quote a couple of poets with whom I am not familiar, but who write verse about nature. One is Brian Gent; the other a woman — o’Farrell??

Liz I’ve always liked poetry so look out for ones about gardens, nature etc. Soory but I’m not sure who the woman is that you’re referring to. xx
