was right and today is sunny and warm, with weekend temperatures set to reach 25C/77F. When it gets that warm, and the air pollution inevitably worsens, I go to the plot early.
This week I’ve hand-weeded all round the onions, which are doing well, and will do the same with the potatoes, where I noticed that a few of the second-early Charlottes have foliage appearing.
Plenty of annual flower seeds such as nasturtiums are now appearing, having self-seeded from last year. I’d rather have too many than too few as I can always hoe off or pull up any unwanted ones.
The alliums roseum that I planted last autumn now have flower stems on them. I’ve not not grown these before so it’ll be interesting to see what they’re like.

It’s been a gorgeous day here too, it’s so nice to see the sunshine at last. I’ve still got a few more potatoes to plant but the ones already in containers are ready for earthing up, a job for the weekend.

Goodness, seeing as you’ve finished your weeding, would you like to pop over and weed here, too? It’ll just take a day or ….maybe eight! Of course I’m kidding (kind of). Had some really lovely baby Yukon gold potatoes last weekend and wondered how yours were doing.

I have some Charlotte at just about the same stage. It’s probably my favourite variety. Never had any luck with Nasturtiums though – they say they grow best on “poor” soil, so maybe mine is too fertile for them?

Mark good for you. They’re mine too. Nasturtiums, and other flowers, don’t do at all well on rich soil. Cheers.

It’s gone from winter to summer overnight hasn’t it. It’s definitely a good idea to go to the plot early. I hope you have a good weekend. I hear there may be thundery showers. No bad thing though, we will need some water on the plot by then. CJ xx

Your garden is looking pristine, not a weed in sight! I wish mine looked a tenth as good! Summer is on its way. I remember growing up when the occasional high 70s seemed unbearable and now in the US it is not unusual to hit the mid 90s. On days like those, the 70s seem quite cool!

Liz thanks but there are always plenty of weeds somewhere on the plot. It sure looks like it. I really don’t like it too hot as it usually gets humid as well, and the air quality here worsens noticeably. xx

It was indeed a warm few days! How nice to have self-sown annuals like nasturtium, I will have to wait another year before we have those here. At the moment, we just have self-sown weeds! Please show us photos of the alliums when they flower, they look really strong and healthy.

It’s astonishing how quickly things grow once it warms up. I’ve noticed seedling finally appearing in the greenhouse. What a shame you have air pollution! xxx
