Apart from yesterday I was on the plot every morning last week. The foliage on the first early potatoes Red Duke of York has started dying back so one morning I had a gentle dig around one plant by hand and found a handful of good sized potatoes.
Every day I’ve been picking some strawberries to bring home and eat. Needless to say they taste every bit as good as they look.
Among the pot marigolds are some that have a touch of red, often as a delicate edging to each petal tip and more visible on the undersides as seen here.
The Chiltern Seeds catalogue lists several Touch of Red varieties including Buff, Orange and Mixed.

My, that’s a pretty calendula! Yummy potatoes and strawberries too. Summertime!
We had the remnants of a tropical storm “Bill” from the Gulf of Mexico come through yesterday. The rain was welcome for our gardens, but that and the winds brought down a huge limb from the silver maple in my backyard. Fortunately, no one was around and it landed mostly on grass.

Liz I do like the biscuit (buff) coloured ones. Yes they tasted every bit as good as they look.
I think the those ‘Bill’ remnants are due over here at the end of the week. It’s a shame when trees loose limbs like that. Thank goodness it landed where it did. xx

We’ve been eating our new potatoes.. and loads of strawberries.. even gave brother in law and family a icecream tub full and still they’re are coming.. we have too many strawberry plants me thinks.. next year we’ll cut down.

I am so envious – my Calendula will be lucky to have time to flower this year. They self-seed and the seedlings are very immature. Your potatoes make a wonderful picture, as do your glowing strawberries. xxx

It’s a great time of year when the harvests start. I haven’t had any potatoes yet but I’m looking forward to the first of the year. I know you prefer raspberries to strawberries but I’m the other way around, sadly I don’t think my strawberries will give a huge harvest this year, I need to make a new strawberry bed and get some new plants really otherwise I’ll be without them again next year.

Jo it’s certainly something that I do look forward too at this time of year. That’s a shame. Get your strawberry bed and plants sorted out in the autumn and you’ll have lots of fruit next year.

I’m growing Red Duke of York too but I don’t think mine are ready yet. They still have flowers and foliage. I might have a rummage in the soil in a few weeks time to see what’s there. Exciting! We’ve got a few too many strawberries at the moment. Admittedly not a big problem to have. xx
