A week ago last Wednesday the Newton Park Horticultural Society took delivery of it’s annual order of bags of compost, horse manure, etc. The pallets, 14 this time, have to be left on the roadside verge and everything shifted by hand some distance into the trading shed! Thankfully it was dry and there were plenty of helpers so it was done in a couple of hours, including a much needed tea break!
Last Sunday plot neighbour Trevor and myself acquired some wooden frames which we barrowed across to our plots. After lunch I went back and put mine up which as you see are either side of the shed, replacing the wire mesh.
I was there again Monday, Thursday and yesterday mostly digging, and have now prepared most of the vegetable areas. In fact yesterday I planted a handful of Jerusalem artichoke tubers which I’d kept, planting them in the opposite, north-western corner, to where they grew last year. I also planted five Foremost first early potatoes for this years A4A Great Spud Challenge!
Hopefully during next week I will be planting some onion sets and sowing some broad beans. At home I’ll be sowing sweet pea and tomato seeds in pots, and various others as well. More on that another time.
Lastly how about this white crocus which I found nestling in the long grass

You’ve really got going with the allotment, you’re putting me to shame. The wooden frames look smart and will be just the thing to grow some climbers up. I love that white crocus, it really makes the orange part stand out.

I was beginning to feel that spring might come after all, and decided to visit the plot to see how it’s going. You are having a fine old time aren’t you! I think the wooden frames look very nice. I think I should acquire some of those myself, for securing the dogs’ playpen on the deck. And some crocuses . . .

Gerry hello, it’s going well as you can see! It’s been very spring like today so I emptied the shed, cleaned and sorted everything and put it all back again.

Great recycling idea for trellis/fencing. You could experiment with growing your colourful cup cake plants up and down it. (Reference to last post) 😉
Your shed looks well finished with its new and original extensions either side, I do like how it is in the picture.

It’s good to see that all is progressing well on Plot 124 since I have been away gallivanting here and there! I’m so pleased you are finally doing what you have been waiting so long to do! The new trellises look perfect ~ I’m sure you’ll have something growing up them before long, if not one of your bean varieties, perhaps a clematis – or sweet peas 🙂 Lovely photo of the crocus ~ I found a bee deeply intent in the middle of one of my purple ones.
