Flighty’s annual flowers

I’ve been delighted with the California Poppies (Eschscholzia californica) which have provided plenty of colour with the mostly bright orange ones, among which is a solitary golden-yellow flower.  I like the creamy-white flowers which include one almost pure white one.  There are also these two which are noticeably different.

I’ve taken the cosmos Xanthos and sunflowers Musicbox that I started off in pots on the windowsill at home to the plot to harden off for a few days before planting out.  One of the cosmos is just a few inches tall but already has a tiny flower bud. The seeds that I sowed direct have now started to appear so I can see where they can go.

It won’t be long before the first collomia grandiflora, love-in-a-mist and pot marigold flowers start appearing.

At long last the daffodil and tulip leaves have nearly died back and can now be cleared.  I’m going to sow love-in-a-mist (Nigella damascena) Persian Jewels  in these areas.  Where the crocuses were I’ve sown dwarf cornflowers (Centaurea cyanus) Polka Dot.

Have a good weekend!

Those California poppies are beauties. I’ve got loads of buds on my oriental poppies, more this year than any before so I’m hoping for a good show. My cosmos are also being hardened off ready for being planted out and I’ve noticed the same thing, a bud on one of the tiny plants.

Isn’t it fun to augment your perennials with annual flowers. You have plenty of colour there!

    Hello Mr F,

I am mightily impressed with the first poppy. It is like a solar powered beacon with a heavenly halo.
The red one is a real show-off variety. Xxx

The poppies look wonderful. I’m sure I saw some of the pale cream ones on the television coverage of Chelsea. I put more tomatoes out today, along with some flowers – dahlias, cosmos (‘Lemonade’ – pale yellow one) and nicotiana ‘Lime Green’. It’s all go! CJ xx

  6. Some lovely colour there, nice to see.

Lovely seeing the California Poppies in that many colours!
That’s a nice range of annuals. The cosmos fast flowering habit always amazes me.
    Thanks and same to you!

  8. I always start my cosmos too early and they get all leggy and die. You have inspired me to try again! Xx
