This week I’ve sown…

the last of the flowers and vegetables that I’m growing this year.

The climbing French beans Sultana and runner beans Red Rum have been slow and erratic to germinate and grow.  I only want eight of each but in case I don’t end up with that number I’ve also sown some dwarf French beans Sprite.

The California poppies (eschscholzia californica), which self-seeded from last year, are now starting to flower.  As well as the eye-catching orange ones there’s also a creamy white one.

Here’s a couple more pot marigolds Flighty’s favourites.

Have a good weekend!

Pretty calendula and California poppies. Good luck with the beans.

The cream poppy looks so pure. It is odd how some things take to rooting happily and other seeds take their time, as if they are spending time thinking about whether to germinate and grow, or not!

    xx

How wonderful to see so many beauties in different colours! Love them all!
Good luck with your French beans!
Thanks and have a good weekend to you too..

  4. I love the California poppies! I grew them once and they self seeded the next year, but never again. How long have you been growing yours?

    • Flighty says:

Cathy good for you. What a shame. I grow them most years but self seeding is erratic, and occasionally a plant or two does survive through the winter surprisingly. xx

Your marigolds are doing beautifully in the garden — the second or third round of reseeded plants. How nice the California poppies reseed for you.

  6. Chloris says:

    Love your marigolds and poppies.

I always struggle with bean germination, no idea why, you’d think they’d be easy, great big seeds like that. I cheated this year and bought plants, which are already 5′ tall with buds, they’ve really raced away. I could do with some French and borlotti beans as well really. Lovely to see the Californian poppies. Wishing you a good weekend Flighty. CJ xx

Good luck with the beans. I always sow lots more than I really need, because bean seeds are usually pretty cheap. I like to sow several different types too, to decrease the chances of a total crop failure. This year I have some “Tunny Beans” which are bicolored, like Yin-Yang beans.

  9. Christina says:

I always find I have to grow more than I need to account for losses

  10. Jo says:

The climbing French beans and runner beans will probably all germinate now that you’ve got a back up, that’s usually the way. The California poppies are so pretty, gorgeous colours, and the Flighty’s Favourites are as cheerful as ever.

It has been an odd year re seeds germinating, I’ve had problems with peppers and tomatoes this year. How lovely those flowers sit together, a lovely combination of colours.xxx

  12. I love orange self sown poppies and marigolds Flighty so cheery
