The temperature dipped to around zero for a while early this morning so I was thankful to see that there hadn’t been a frost and all was okay when I looked round.
Afterwards I’d started doing some plotting when something over my left shoulder caught my eye. When I looked round I found that it was a fox drinking from the the washing-up bowl pond by the log pile.
When it had finished it then came closer and went onto the potato patch.
It was only about ten feet away and stood there looking around and at me before it turned, went across where I’ll be growing the climbing beans and headed off the plot.
This is the dark one we’ve been seeing recently, but now has a mostly light-grey coat and looks in fairly good condition.
I was delighted to see this wonderful animal close-up and take a few photos.

a friend of mine says you can get tablets for mange in foxes that you can hide in morsels of food he cured a couple of foxes that way recently, but yours looks in good condition and how nice to get so close, you cant blame the urban fox for making the most of the mountain of food waste we create when they come into our lives,

David you can indeed, and I know someone who uses them like that. Thankfully our resident allotment ones are generally okay. I agree.

I’ve always said that you only need the tiniest of ponds to attract wildlife! What a beauty and how wonderful to have such a close encounter.

Brilliant that another wild creature is making use of your wildlife pond. I really want to put one in down at my plot, but at the moment I am slightly concerned that it will be a magnet for the vandals. We shall see. A stream runs along the boundary, so there is some water, but it occurred to me that a pond is a very different type of habitat and that it would probably attract all sorts of life. Fantastic photos, it must be amazing to see a fox so close. CJ xx

What a wonderful healthy looking fox! A real treat for you…and me! I just love seeing healthy ones. Gosh, how tame it seems, you may have a new friend. It’s surprising how water will attract all types of wildlife isn’t it? I have a feeling you two will be seeing rather a lot of each other!xxx

Fabulous photos, Flighty – and how thrilling to have the fox wander about so close to where you were working. I’ve not seen foxes yet but I heard them a couple of nights ago. Thankfully our foxes now seem to be looking good after a few years of looking a sickly yellow with thin tails.
