Before going to the plot on Tuesday morning to check that all was okay following the storm I had to go out and was surprised at the number of toppled roadside trees that I saw. One large one had fallen onto several new cars parked on a showroom forecourt.
Everything was okay at the plot where my main concern had been debris from other plots. Walking round the site I could see that some greenhouses had lost glass panels and this one, thankfully glassless beforehand, had just collapsed.
Yesterday morning there was a frost for the first time this autumn. It was calm and sunny so I spent a couple of hours mostly cutting back the comfrey to ground level to add to the compost heap and removing the support canes from the now flowerless and leafless sunflowers. I also started to pull up the pot marigolds which have finished flowering, unlike this one.
Happy Birthday to Glo (Porcelain Rose), although I’m a day early as it’s not until tomorrow. I took this rose Pretty Lady photo this morning just for you. Have a lovely day!

Some of the storm damage is terrible, we’ve got away so lightly here in Yorkshire. No frosts for us yet either, though I don’t think our first one can be far away now. I really need to sort out my pots and containers, I always get caught out and the frost ends up damaging some. Happy birthday to Glo, your Pretty Lady rose is beautiful.

Beautiful “Happy Birthday” rose. Glad you didn’t suffer any damage up at the plot. Can’t believe you’ve had frost already. Was up to 18C here today, though when the wind got up the temperature dropped a lot.

It’s always a worry when a storm passes through with a hopeless feeling of not being able to do anything about it – just keep your fingers crossed. It makes me sad when trees are uprooted – they seem to be the things that suffer most – nature can be cruel sometimes. Lovely to see your rose still blooming.

If it’s stormy I lie in bed wondering whether the greenhouse will be in one piece in the morning. :0 it’s pretty sheltered though so has always been OK. Sad to hear there has been damage on the plots and trees down but as long as nobody was hurt then that is the main thing. Still no frost here and I’m still picking flowers from the plot. Lots and lots of rain though. Still, to be expected now it’s autumn. Have a lovely weekend. x

We were spared the storm this time. We have experienced many like it in our climate, which, is why we have stunted trees and not too many of them. It is early in the season, we may yet have to brace ourselves.

The British Isles can be such a temperate place, especially here in the south, that it’s easy to forget how unforgiving nature can be. I lived in the tropics as a child and experienced hurricanes, twisters and monsoon rains so, bizarrely, I find extreme weather somewhat thrilling! A storm or severe winter can remind us not to take our mild UK climate for granted! Storm damage can be devastating but serves as a reminder that everything is temporary and where the higher power lies! Glad you suffered no damage although it’s a shame that greenhouse won’t ever be glassed in now!
