Autumn joy

Many thanks to everyone who wished me a happy birthday.

I’d like to mention Daffy’s post Flighty! It’s your birthday! and Glo’s one When the Frost… both of which, as you can see, quote seasonal poems.Β  I had been thinking of quoting the following poem for my own post last Sunday!

Autumn Joy by John Ellis

Has there ever been a morning like this

In October, when sun lips through trees kiss

weathered stone and paint the garden timber?

Has ever before seen such a miracle

of leaves, burnished both ochre and umber,

so languidly wrought beneath the garden wall?

Has such a bright furnace glow ever settled

quite so smilingly over grass metalled

with gold, to augur so peerless a day?

And was ever a prize so jostled for

in seasons’ race won more deservedly,

than by this glorious morning in October?

Have a good weekend!

I’m loving my walks in the woods at the moment with all the wonderful colours and crunchy leaves underfoot. An apt poem for this time of year.

  2. Doris says:

My favorite season and that poem captures it well.

  3. Mas says:

That is a wonderful poem (as were the one’s on Daffy and Glo’s pages); autumn is a great time of year – there’s something about all the colours, all the leaves on the floor (as the trees get rid of “this year’s look” ); plus the food – gone are salads and sandwiches, and in come stews, baked things and all sorts of heart-warming things; the sort of stuff that makes you happy while perking you up after being out in the cold a while.

    Have a great weekend there,
    thank you for sharing

Mas I think that autumn is a wonderful time, especially for poets!
I’m certainly agree about the foods you mention, and that are always welcome to come home to in the coming months.
      Thanks, you too!

The happy bright greeting of your fabulous marigold banner dims all other prose and poetry for me:
It says it all, the types of words of welcome and kindness that you sometimes hear people exchange :
The actions that tell you there is openness, sincerity and trust, still thriving in some places:
All these elements make for special memories and for wonderfully content and relaxed days.

  5. Glo says:

Thanks for the link, Flighty and pleased to know you had a pleasant birthday ~ The poem you have chosen is terrific – I would like to hear it read aloud πŸ™‚

  6. Glo says:

It’s me again. I tried to find out if there were any other poems by John Ellis, but was unable to locate him or this poem. Did you find it in a poetry book?

Hope you had a great day, Flighty. And many more happy days to follow!
