FlightRuff!

April 30, 2008 · 10 Comments

Today is even worse than yesterday as it’s been raining heavily all morning!

I went to the plot for a quick, and rather sodden, walk round as I’ve not been there since Friday. Everything is certainly growing especially the grass and weeds! When it does get dryer and warmer it’ll all be well away.

Anyway I thought that as I needed a smile then perhaps you’d like to share these make-me-smile images.

Here’s one for cat lovers, I think that Daffy will smile at this one and I’m thinking of changing from FlightBuff to FlightRuff!

Me and others

April 22, 2008 · 18 Comments

Last Saturday Veg Plotting did an entry Here’s the Second Awards Bus where as you’ll see she was kind enough to award me this

It’s always pleasing to be given such awards so thanks VP it’s much appreciated.

As soon as I saw it I knew that I’d award it to Daffy who loves a good chat, and who I’ve long called a charming chatterbox.

My very oldest blog favourite Disgruntled Commuter did an entry yesterday The Last Commute ending three years of one of my favourite favourites! As you can see she’s not giving up blogging but since she’s moving from London to Scotland she felt that a new blog City Exile was needed.

Nikki in her entry the accidental blogger yesterday mentions that her ‘Roomie’ has started a blog beginninghere. If you like photos of flowers then you’ll love her blog so do stop by and say hello!

I was tagged…

April 20, 2008 · 10 Comments

by MidwifeMuse a couple of weeks ago and have finally got round to doing it.

1. Pick up the nearest book of 123 or more pages.

It’s the non-fiction paperback Bomber Boys: Fighting Back 1940-1945 by Patrick Bishop that I’m currently reading.

2. Open the book to page 123 and find the 5th sentence.

A further 3,515 suffered heavy damage.

3. Post the next 3 sentences.

Two hospitals, seventeen churches, twenty-four schools, two theatres, eight cinemas, seven post and telegraph offices, one railway station, six banks and ten hotels were also swept away. The list also includes twenty unspecified ‘official buildings’, four ‘military installations’ and forty-three ‘industrial installations’. Given the great breadth of the violence done to Cologne it is hard to see them as anything other than incidental targets.

4. Tag 5 people.

This I’m not going to do. However if anyone wants to do this this tag then please feel free to do so.

I looked back at some of the tag links to see what books people picked up. I also wonder just how many people did this tag, which seems slightly pointless to me. Some bloggers think that being tagged is like receiving a chain letter ! Although I don’t usually like doing them I think that generally it’s just a bit of fun if you’ve been tagged and want to do it. If you don’t then I think you should politely inform the person who tagged you that you’re not doing it.

Plan A…

April 17, 2008 · 21 Comments

was to do my usual entry about wildlife programmes on terrestrial TV next week. However on buying the Radio Times and looking through it I found that there is nothing worth mentioning !

So on to Plan B. Yesterday whilst at the bookshop I drafted out some ideas for an alternative entry. All well and good until at home last night I realised that I’d left it behind and couldn’t remember enough detail to be able to redo it !

Moving swiftly on to Plan C. A good idea only there isn’t one! I’ve lots that I could write about but I’m sitting here drinking a cup of tea faffing around thinking about what I’m going to do on the plot later today.

My apologies to everyone who has stopped by here expecting to read a proper entry only to find me waffling on instead. Can I suggest that you have a look at one of my favourites entries. There’s lots to chose from and I would be very surprised if you can’t find one that’s interesting and informative.

One event that I’m sure you all want to know about is Welly Week! Mine are a very old pair of brown Derriboots which I don’t often need to wear but certainly did on Snowy Sunday!

Normal service should be resumed here at the weekend with Frog Ponderings(3) on Saturday followed by a Plot124 entry, probably on Sunday.

Have a good weekend !

The hopeful gardener

April 15, 2008 · 16 Comments

The hopeful gardener (author unknown)

Sow the seeds with hopefulness and lay them in a row.

Cover them and label them for they will surely grow.

Watch the row with hopefulness but wait at least a day.

Actually, the seeds won’t grow until you go away.

Leave the row forgetfully and moan about the rain.

Go and play on sunny days - it’s time to look again.

All the tall plants that you see most probably are weeds.

Those part-eaten spindly things have grown from seeds.

Hoe most conscientiously and lift weeds by the root.

Make space for your little plants so they can really shoot.

They’ll grow to maturity if you get the weather.

Then you’ll have to harvest them - all of them together:

radishes in millions and green beans by the score;

half a ton of lettuces you don’t want any more.

It’s Thursday again!

April 3, 2008 · 11 Comments

If you missed the first part of the superb Tiger - Spy in the Jungle last week then do try and watch the second film on BBC1 Sunday at 8.00pm. It’s simply one of the best wildlife programmes I’ve ever watched.

Natural World next week is Reindeer Girls on BBC2 Wednesday at 8.00pm which is more about about the people and their lifestyle than the wildlife. For all that it is an engaging film with some stunning Norwegian landscapes.

Jaguar Adventure With Nigel Marven is a new six part series that starts with on Five Tuesday at 7.30pm. This beautiful, elusive creature is the fourth of the big cats, defined as those who roar. We’re used to seeing documentaries on lions, tigers and leopards but this series should prove both enjoyable and illuminating.

Saturday sees the start of National Pet Month here in the UK. Knowing that many of you have pets then I’m sure that you’ll be celebrating this event!

I’ve not mentioned anything ecological or environmental here for a while but PolythenePam has done some excellent entries recently on plastic bags and bottled water in her blog Leave Only Footprints. They make interesting, and sobering, reading. I’m proud to say that I try not to use the first and don’t drink the second as part of my effects to be a green Flighty.

I think that I’ll be sofa flying yet again on Sunday if the weather forecast is anything to go by! Anyway have a good weekend!

A new friend

March 28, 2008 · 16 Comments

It’s always nice when I make a new friend here as I’ve done this week.

There was a comment from Glo on my Easter Sunday entry last Tuesday. She didn’t blog and hadn’t commented here before so it was most welcome.

Following that she sent me a couple of emails with links to some of her wildlife photos such as this eagle landing.

I thanked Glo and suggested that perhaps she should start a blog. She did just that with Porcelain Rose, and as you can see she’s already done several entries with some lovely poems and photos. I’m sure that it will prove to be a popular blog and is already one of my favourites.

On my entry The pond last Tuesday lawn lounger Louise asked if the frogs had found it yet. Well have a look at this pond-frog1.gif It’s not quite what it seems but it’s thanks to Glo as you’ll see if you read this!

Thanks to all my friends as yesterday was the best day yet for visits here. I’m especially grateful to everyone who not only stops by but also comments.

WordPress problems!

March 27, 2008 · 11 Comments

Please note that I, and others, are having a few problems with WordPress.

Some comments that I made on friends blogs, including Daffy and Nikkipolani, have not appeared on the entries as they’ve been treated as spam! This has been happening with Purplephreak’s comments for some time.

Daffy also lost her photos yesterday for no apparent reason, Nikki’s comments here over the past few days haven’t been linked when they should have been and last night I also noticed some hiccups with the stats.

I’ve emailed WordPress, and Akismet, about these and hope to receive a prompt response. Meantime if things seem a little strange here I apologise but it’s entirely due to circumstances beyond my control.

My usual Thursday entry will be posted this afternoon after I get home.

One hundredth

March 23, 2008 · 12 Comments

This is the one hundredth entry that I’ve done here on Flighty’s Plot. I’m going to leave a proper celebration for a few months until its first birthday, and when Plot 124 will also be one year old.

Hopefully the weather will then be nice and summery. I’m sitting writing this before 9.00am on Easter Sunday looking out the window at the snow not only falling quite heavily but settling on the rooftops!

Clearly no allotmenteering is going to be done today, or for the next few days, so I shall enjoy some sofa flying instead. After lunch I’m going to settle down to a good read, along with a cup of tea and some plain chocolate biscuits.

Stay warm and take care…Flighty flighty.jpg

My new header!

March 21, 2008 · 14 Comments

Over recent weeks I’ve been enjoying looking at the superb images on NiC’s London Daily Nature Photo.

I’ve always liked photo blogs and this one has become a favourite, especially as the pictures have been taken about 15 miles down the road from me.

I particularly like one image and asked NiC if I could use part of it for my new header! He thankfully agreed and I think that it looks terrific.

I have also changed the theme which I hope you like as much as I do!
