Although I mentioned butterflies in last weeks B is for… it seems slightly incongruous to be doing a post about these wonderful insects at this time of year!
Midwifemuse’s hubby recently disturbed a hibernating Peacock butterfly as she related in A thing of beauty. Last April I was lucky enough to photograph this one off plot.
Natural World: Butterflies – A Very British Obsession which is on next Friday BBC2 at 8.00pm captures their beauty close up in the countryside, and also shows their enduring appeal in various other ways.
Sadly three quarters of Britain’s butterflies are in decline so work done by Butterfly Conservation and the Butterfly World Project is to be applauded and encouraged if these wonderful insects are still to be seen in the wild by future generations.

I remember your Peacock butterfly picture well but it was nice to see it again.
Doris I reckon that was one of my pictures of the year! xx
Ah, yes, I remember that photo you took — gorgeous background, too!
Nikki the plant is an aubretia. xx

I saw quite a few Peacock butterflies in the garden last year, certainly more than I’ve ever noticed before. Perhaps the native plants which I planted are working.
Jo they were noticable so it most have been a good year for them! xx
So beautiful and such an excellent photo, you can almost feel how soft it is.
Midwifemuse thanks! They sure are, and it’s a wonder that they survive at all. xx
