Flighty’s plot

Taking it easy

May 11, 2008 · 24 Comments

Unusually for me I’ve been sneezing, had a runny nose and a sore throat for a day or two. What with that and the fact that I don’t like it too warm, say over 25C, I went to the plot early this morning and did an easy few hours.

I sowed some more flower seeds, continued weeding and took plenty of breaks for a tin mug of tap water whilst trying out my new log seat which Joe gave me, along with a fewer smaller ones for the log pile.

I’ve let the area at the top right-hand (north-east) corner of the plot get rather overrun with grass. However there are plenty of poppies there as well as some knapweed, meadow cranesbill and other wild flowers. I’m going to leave it pretty much alone until the autumn when I’ll dig it over properly then probably sow a packet of perennial plants mixture.

Some of the lettuce and beetroot that I sowed have appeared, there are some well hidden flowers on the rosemary and two of the roses have the beginnings of flower buds on them. A blue tit put in a fleeting appearance at the peanut feeder and there were ladybirds everywhere.

I hope to be there Tuesday, Thursday and Friday next week when apart from taking it easy I’ll be making good use of the log seat!

Gesundheit!…sounds like you have the makings of a nasty cold! Sorry to hear that and hope it passes soon. Good that you were still able to go to the plot and have acquired a new log “prop” on site. Luckily you have some good TV programs lined up, so you’ll be able to take it easy and look after your self. Hope you’re feeling better soon ~ a hot lemon and honey drink may help.

Glo thankfully it’s not been too bad! I’ve not done very much since lunch-time though apart from sofa flying!
Thanks, it may but I’ll stick with a nice cup of tea! xx

Sharp changes in weather mixed with high pollen counts, I’m not surprised you are sniffling and sneezing. Glad to know you will be taking it easy. A nice strong cup of rosey before bed?
Your progress in good! This recent sunshine will have given all the shoots a growth injection and I think next week is forecast for a little rain. Your plot will be thankful of that.
As you can see (read) I lost the battle of the television tonight. Apparently their is a new episode of the Simpsons on and I lost out two to one… I hope Wild China is repeated!

Well, I hope your cold will disappear as the weather warms up for a lovely spring. I’m pleased to hear that your seeds have germinated!

It must have been lovely sitting amongst the greenery on such a day as this. I must say, even though the sun was hot the breezes were gorgeous.

And must say, I only saw a few minutes of Hero and Wild China because housemate and I were chatting so much out in the hallway!!

The log seat and a cool drink sound really inviting. Sometimes I wish for “more land” for planting but then it would need care and attention! I look forward to seeing the perennial patch in bloom next Spring.

Funny how we complain if it is cold, and moan just as much when it is warm! However, we need to take the chance when weather permits.

Is it easier to work on a plot, where you can rip everything up easily and start again, or rotate the items you grow, than a fixed established garden, where it is a major job to (say) remove a herbaceous border?

  • Flighty // May 12, 2008 at 7:20 am

Daffy it’s one reason why I don’t like the summer as much as spring and autumn. I was drinking cups of tea all day, but not close to bedtime!
Thanks, I like to think that it is!
I’m sure Wild China will get shown again. xx

  • Flighty // May 12, 2008 at 7:22 am

Nikki it’s not been too bad but just to be lingering!
Hopefully lots more should be germinating soon as well!

  • Flighty // May 12, 2008 at 7:25 am

Liv it’s always good to sit and relax on the plot. A gentle breeze does make all the difference helping to keep the humidity at bay!
    I really enjoyed both! xx

  • Flighty // May 12, 2008 at 7:28 am

Beginninghere the log is a good seat for a short break whilst drinking a mug of cool water.
More land is all well and good but it’s having the time to spend on it!
Next spring seems like a long time off but it’ll be here all too quickly! xx

We’re never really happy with the weather for much of the time are we?
It’s probably easier, but I won’t be doing it on the plot for a while if at all! Cheers!

everything looks so lush and green with this beautiful weather, though I think we should probably have some rain soon else the plants will start to get thirsty and the government will slap us with another hosepipe ban!

  • Flighty // May 12, 2008 at 5:13 pm

Purplephreak it does indeed! It’s always the same isn’t it with either too much or not enough rain. xx

Hi Flighty, long time no see eh??
Sorry to read about the ol’ sniffles, do you suffer with the Hay Fever ??
Mrs Pixel didn’t used to, but year by year she seems to suffer just a little bit more with it. This week she is on a school residential smack in the middle of the New Forest !!! She’s gone laden down with tablets, eye drops and all sorts of remedies !!!

Glad to read the plot is coming along nicely. Good stuff, keep up the good work.

I hear that refrain frequently - Oh, for more space to plant things! And my reply is usually, “And staff!” Enjoy your little plot, Flighty, and hope that the weather holds up for you.

I love the flowers on this site! I’m moving soon after, finding the perfect home last night and I can not wait to garden there. It’s so beautiful! I hope you have some tips for me?!?

I hardly ever get to see ladybirds in my garden. I have been gardening late afternoon into early evening. I know I mustn’t complain and I do love the summertime, but sometimes it is just too hot to be able to do anything constructive. x

Sounds like a plan! ;-) Taking it easy is one of my favourite things to er do too. Hope that cold clears up soon. Enjoy the good weather while it lasts!

  • Flighty // May 13, 2008 at 4:31 pm

Blue Pixel hello, it has indeed been a long time !
I used to suffer from hay fever but thankfully haven’t for many years. I hope that Mrs Pixel gets on okay.
Yes after a slow April the good weather has spurred me on. Thanks, and cheers!

  • Flighty // May 13, 2008 at 4:35 pm

Nikki I think that even if I didn’t work I wouldn’t want anything bigger. Mind you that is my minimalist tendencies I suppose!
If not staff then time is all too often the limiting factor.
Thanks, it’s been another sunny day today and I’ve been plotting away for most of it! xx

  • Flighty // May 13, 2008 at 4:39 pm

Ciaoamica hello! Thanks, there’s not been many yet but hopefully lots to come!
It sounds like you’ve got lots to look forward too!
You’ll have to do entries about your garden so that you get advice from lots of blogging gardeners, and not just this novice! xx

  • Flighty // May 13, 2008 at 4:41 pm

Louise I’ve been surprised at just how many I’ve seen on the plot!
I prefer to work to mid-morning on sunny, warm days. I really don’t like the heat! xx

  • Flighty // May 13, 2008 at 4:44 pm

Yolanda I hope so, and it’s mine too!
The cold has virtually gone thankfully.
I’ve been plotting most of the day today as later in the week it looks like getting cooler but wetter!
