Flighty’s plot

Rain stopped play!

April 13, 2008 · 22 Comments

Thursday was sunny and warm so as I wasn’t working I spent all morning on the plot. I planted my early potatoes and the onions in the far corner of the plot beyond the log pile. I also planted the gladioli bulbs in three places around the flower areas. The rest of the morning was spent pondering and pottering.

Today it started out bright and sunny, but I was slow to get going when I got up lingering as I did over breakfast before heading off to the plot.

I found another lychnis, which is bigger than the one I mentioned the other day, which I’ve planted in the stone feature. If I get something else for there then I’ll take it out and plant it elsewhere. I also planted a small aquilegia in the front of Nikki’s corner, and some variagated leaved vinca by the smaller log.

I then planted a row of each Leek ‘Musselburgh’, Beetroot ‘Boltardy‘ and Lettuce ‘Little Gem’.

I mulched round the raspberries with the last of the wood chippings, which will keep the weeds down and help retain moisture. The strawberries I was given and planted in the autumn clearly haven’t survived so I’ve dug that area over and will think about what to do there instead. I’m not so concerned about losing those as I’m not that keen on them, much preferring blackberries and raspberries.

I chatted with Trevor who was going to do his stint at the hut and he said that it looked like I wouldn’t be doing much more. He was right as I’d just about cleared up when it got very cloudy indeed and rain stopped play ! It was forecast but at least I had been there a couple of hours.

It feels good to have got a few vegetables planted and sown, and I’ll now consider which flowers I shall sow first and where.

Earlier in the week at home I transplanted the sweet peas so that they’re now two to a square pot, and thankfully they all seem to have survived that okay.

    Wow, working your backside off!
Doesn’t it feel so good when you get things in the ground? Now you get to hover and wish they’d grow a tad faster. lol.

Tina hello! Definitely not, I take it real easy!
Yes it does. I always have a walk round, looking at everything both when I get there and just before I leave. xx

Well I think you are going great guns! It’s going to be absolutely full of surprises around every corner once everything is fully established and on-the-grow. The strawberries need to be looked after for when I vist! I’ll bring my own cream! My dad has even created for me my very own strawberry patch!
We have been bunny watching all day! We have five… one must have been a late bloomer! They are eating the tulips and the gladioli but hubby says he should get angry but they are so darn cute! Baby bunnyhops make me cry with laughter! So much energy is put into it! You enjoy your relaxing afternoon after all of the hard work and we will continue the rabbit watch! Have fun!

Daffy thanks! I’d like to think so.
Sorry but if you want strawberries you’ll have to bring them with the cream or sweet talk one of my plot neighbours as there won’t be any growing on the plot this year!
That sounds like fun! Do keep us informed of their antics. You too! xx

    Us???
Well thanks a bunch! I’ll just stay home and eat my dads then! ;o)

  • flighty // April 13, 2008 at 5:11 pm

Daffy us meaning me and everyone who reads your comments or entries!
Sorry but I got given six and they haven’t survived the winter, as they were unprotected and in very soggy ground so have probably rotted away. Can’t I tempt you with some blackberries or raspberries instead.
Do your bunnies hop like this http://www.mybunnies.com/images/dancingnew/rabbit2.gif
    Have a good evening! xx

ah! I see. As an afterthought I did think you meant you and Frog Morton! :o)
Where did you get that cute little bunny! That is about the same size as the ones we have in the garden. Oh and they have also been eating the leaves on the blackberry bushes! Blackberries and raspberries, home grown by you would be perfect! What about rhubarb? ;o)
    You too Flighty!xx

I thought that Glasgow was grubbing-up some of their allotments, and selling the ground to raise cash, but noticed yesterday that some new ones seem to be being prepared with nice new huts….so that is good news for those who have no garden!

Daffy ah, now I see !
I found the bunny on Artmeliana’s blog, and then the website that it came from. They seem to eat just about anything don’t they!
My plot neighbour Brian said to help myself to some of his magnificent looking rhubarb, which I may well do during the week as I forgot this morning. xx

Irishpisky hello! Selling some sites continues to be a problem but they do have a (legal?) obligation to provide them. Inevitably there are loopholes and grey areas, so it’s very much a case of how enlightened any authority is about them. Cheers!

WOw, I am excited about your little gem lettuce and all the berries. I wish you a very productive summer *crosses fingers for a warm one with just the right amount of rain*. Is that a tall order?

    xx

Congratulations on your plantings! Good to hear you were able to plant, potter and ponder before the liquid sunshine started streaming down.

Glad to hear your sweet peas have paired up and graduated to bigger pots. Last year I poked in some leftover sweet pea seeds in my front window boxes, but too late in the year. They grew long stems, but didn’t flower. However, I do believe they’ve lasted over the winter, and that there is new growth on them…not sure, but what if they actually blossomed this year! Anything is possible!

  • nikkipolani // April 14, 2008 at 1:39 am

Oh, for some of that liquid sunshine! I’m looking forward to seeing all the new things you’ve planted. I love strawberries, but so often they disappoint. Hope your other berries do really well for you!

  • flighty // April 14, 2008 at 7:23 am

Liv are you really! I’ll be more exited when I see the end results. Thanks!
It’s forecast to be a warm and wet summer. A tall order indeed as the weather is never as we want it when we want it! xx

  • flighty // April 14, 2008 at 7:27 am

Glo thanks! The forecast is for more liquid sunshine through the week.
Fingers crossed for both our sweet peas!
It is surprising just what is both possible and happens. xx

  • flighty // April 14, 2008 at 7:32 am

Nikki I’d gladly swap you! I’ll be checking every visit.
I’d be unhappy if I really liked strawberries, mind you I would probably have cosseted them rather than neglecting them. So do I! xx

Hi Flighty, you have been busy, so have I, even dodging the hailstorms we have been having. I have gladioli for the garden this year, some I bought myself, a dwarf variety, Flevo Jive which are a lovely pale yellow and some my MIL gave me, Video, which are taller and pale pink. I have had success with leek Musselburgh and beetroot Boltardy, I don’t grow lettuce, the slugs just eat all mine! I haven’t any sweet peas for my garden this year, I just didn’t get round to sowing any, but I shall have raspberries and strawberries, my plants are looking very healthy. x

  • flighty // April 15, 2008 at 6:23 am

Louise I’d like to have been busier but I’ve also been dodging the hail and rain!
I like the sound of the dwarf gladioli.
I shall write on how all mine grow, and fingers crossed that I don’t have a slug problem.
You could still grow some sweet peas! Sounds like you’ll enjoying plenty of soft fruit later on. xx

You did a lot of work before the rain came to spoil the fun. It is a busy time of year right now, isn’t it? I’ve been working hard in my veggie garden and greenhouse too. But it is nice to be able to plant and sow veggies again. I even had my first small harvest (water cress and radishes) of the year. :-)

I had mostly sunny days last week so I got a lot done in the garden. Now it’s sunny with some showers.

  • flighty // April 15, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Yolanda I would have liked to have done a bit more! Still it was nice this morning so I did another couple of hours then. The next few weeks will see me planting and sowing just about everything!
It sounds like you’ve been busy as well.
I think that we’d all like plenty of dry and sunny days from now on. xx

  • cafecortado // April 15, 2008 at 4:37 pm

Been busy myself too! But not on productive gardening, I’m afraid to say. Spring cleaning and web-site development has been occupying my energy. Still, at least I’ve something a little tangible (www.mark.oxford123.co.uk) even if it won’t taste nice! Have a good week!

  • Flighty // April 15, 2008 at 5:38 pm

Cafecortado keeping busy like you have is good but do find time to get out and about on the sunny days!
    Thanks, you too! Cheers.
