Yesterday morning following on from the entry I did I decided to venture out in the cold to the horticultural society hut and the allotment site.
Not surprisingly I was the only customer at the hut whilst there so I chatted with the guys on duty. I had a cup of tea, bought some peanuts for the birds and two different sized plastic screw-top spray bottles then went on to the plot.
By that time the snow had mostly gone but you can see how bleak it was
Note the still upright daffodils and you can just see two starlings on the right-hand feeder. The brown and white box, at top left, is a beehive.
After refilling the feeders, clearing the ice on the pond and taking this photo I watched a couple of coal tits on the peanut feeder then came home to warm up and have lunch.
This morning when I pulled back the curtains in the living room I saw a chaffinch perched on the wing mirror of a car parked just a few feet away! The forecast for today, Easter Monday, is cold and sunny but so far it’s been grey and now at 10.00am it’s snowing.

Hi Flighty, great to see updates on the allotment, sometimes Starlings are all we get to see on feeders, especially fat ball ones! Have seen no sun so far, just a veil of cloud all morning, although it is definitely milder down here. I have been out on the patch, I have finally got round to sorting out my compost heap. Every year I bag up the oldest so this heap is empty, then transfer from the next heap to the empty one, and leave about a third in the one I have transferred from, in readiness to grow my Pattypans in, confused yet? Anyway this is a good job done, although now I have backache and have come indoors to recover with a bar of Cadburys Dairy Milk! x

Louise not really much to update at the moment but once I get planting and seeding…
It sounds like you’ve been busy, and yes I’m sort of confused!
I’m sure that relaxing with a bar of chocolate will do you the world of good. xx

As I’ve heard on the news, we didn’t get a white Christmas but we’ve got a white Easter.
Is that a sentry box?
xx
Liv // March 24, 2008 at 3:48 pm
A sentry box for shovels and pitchforks
Do you have teeny-tiny shelves in there?
flighty // March 24, 2008 at 3:59 pm
Liv it’s been a wintry Easter that’s for sure.
That’s my sentry box shed, as you well know!* said wagging finger*
Much as I would have liked a slightly bigger one remember that the plot is only 30 x 60 feet. Everything I need fits in there including a wooden chair. One sunny day I’ll put it all out on the pallet patio and take a photo for an entry. xx

Liv I use a fork and spade. What would I need a pitchfork for?
Yes there’s one shelf, and I’ll be putting some hooks up as well later on. xx

Mmmm, and I’m loving that new header. Pear tree blooms, cherry blossoms, peach tree flowers - all so springy and happy. Soon it will be the same at your plot - once the snow QUITS! And bravo to those courageous daffodils

Nikki I’m glad that you like it. All I need now is some spring like weather to go with it! I’m really surprised that the daffodils have survived this long as they do tend to go over in the rain and wind. xx

Hi Flighty
Happy 101st entry! yes like the new header, still snow showers in the midlands, hopefully warmer during week
When I opened the curtains yesterday I was greeted by a woodpecker making short work of next doors nuts holder which hangs from their tree, he often visits, they have tried taking foto of him but hes camera shy!
take care

Joan hello and thanks! Let’s hope that was winters final fling!
Lucky you. I’ve rarely seen woodpeckers but I’m told that there are some resident in the trees at the far end of the allotments so perhaps one day…
It seems that many birds are camera shy. I’m happy enough just to watch them.
You too! xx

Wow.. there are daffodils. We have no flowers blooming here yet, that I’m aware of. Where IS Spring?

Hi Flighty! I came across your blog and was attracted by that beautiful blossom on your header. I began reading of your gardening adventures and interest in nature. I live on the coast of British Columbia and have a fascination with nature, which has expanded since I acquired a digital camera. I am often out walking with my camera in hand and have taken many photos of this beautiful area and its flora and fauna. The super macro capability has shown me worlds I had never seen before. I am also drawn to the sea life and the interaction between various creatures…bald eagles, heron, seals, etc. You have been mentioning getting on with the gardening, but I see from weather reports that the UK has been hit by snow and cold. It’s also daffodil time here, and my hyacinths are finally poking through. I’m not sure if you’d be interested in seeing any of my nature photos, but if so, please let me know. I hope it warms up for you soon

Lisa hello! Until this weekend it has been relatively mild, but wet, so we’ve had daffodils, crocus and so on for a few weeks.
It’s the rain that has prevented gardeners from starting to plant and sow things as the ground has been too wet.
I sympathise with your long winter and hope that spring, and flowers, arrives soon. Take care.

Glo hello and welcome! That header blossom was seen here in London just a couple of weeks ago.
It sounds wonderful there with all the various fauna and flora. To get out and take photos of it must be great.
Until this weekend it’s been mostly mild and wet so I hope that it’s winters final fling, and it now gets drier and warmer so gardening can get properly under way.
I’d love to see some of your photos so I’ll email you. Thanks for the kind offer.
My thanks again for stopping by and commenting, it’s much appreciated. Take care.

Hi Flighty - a belated Happy Easter to you. I hope you had a good sofa flying time!
flighty // March 25, 2008 at 2:30 pm
VP hello! I did thanks, as it certainly wasn’t allotmenteering weather. xx
princessfairytoes // March 25, 2008 at 6:24 pm
wow you have an alotment
flighty // March 25, 2008 at 6:49 pm
Princessfairytoes I do indeed! It’s a half plot on a site just a few minutes walk from home which I took on last summer. It’s now all ready for lots of flowers, herbs and vegetables to be planted and sown. There’s also blackberries and raspberries.
I’m really looking forward to the next few months and I’ll be doing lots of entries all about it. xx

If Bruce has been behaving himself then please give him a dog treat from me! xx

Hi again ~ Thanks for your email and I have sent you some photos. Sometimes I am inspired to write poetry to go with the photos
Hope it has dried up a bit there…it is overcast here but the sun is attempting to brighten things up.
flighty // March 25, 2008 at 7:46 pm
Glo hello! I’ve just been looking at your wonderful photos. Thanks for sending them.
I like poetry but don’t write it regretfully! You should start a blog for yours and the photos!
It’s been dry today but the forecast is for milder but wet weather through to the weekend. xx
