Flighty’s plot

Favourite animals

December 13, 2007 · 18 Comments

I would be very surprised if otters and polar bears weren’t on just about everybody’s list of favourite animals.

Luckily for all of us in the UK there are TV programmes about both next week.

An Otter in the Family is on BBC2 Sunday at 6.30pm, concluding the following Sunday at 3.45pm. It tells the tale of Grace, an orphan otter cub, rescued and raised by TV presenter Philippa Forrester.

Polar Bear Week with Nigel Marven is on Five Monday to Wednesday and Friday at 7.15pm. The programme also shows artic foxes, beluga whales, harp seal cubs and caribou.

Have a good weekend!

We have watched otters playing on the shore line and another bobbing about in amongst the sea weed, lying on its back munching on a crab, on the Isle of Eigg off the west coast of Scotland, a magical experience.
Polar bears, err no, I’ve not seen any, other than a very sad looking one in a zoo a long time ago.

My two personal favorites are bats and wrens, both of which I can watch from the comfort of my own home

I’ve made a note to tune in; both shows sound quite interesting (and otters are wonderful, if smelly (in captivity), creatures )
    Have a good day

(oh except my morning (no – I know it is almost midday; I should have had more coffee this morning 8*) ) brain just realised I don’t pick up channel 5; so unfortunately I’m going to miss the polar bear week 8-( maybe I’ll re-watch my DVDs of “life in the freezer” and pretend 8*) )

Oh Lovely! Well done Flighty for finding something perfect to watch!
(Otters are smelly Mas I agree but so are husbands, children and Bruce the hamster so I guess we must automaticlly look past the smells!)

There is an otter park Flighty, at Brough (I think) on the A66 and it is really good. It is also a good spot for seeing deer and wild rabbits. (Wild, as in hopping all over the place! :o )

I do like to see a polar bear, I think they look so cool! I mean in the relaxed sense. They look as if nothing stresses them! Oh to be a polar bear.

Funny you should say that Flighty, but in my family I’m the only one that loves the rather impressive traits of the Otter, the others all think that they are nothing but irritating show offs with nothing but food on their minds !!!

Plus they make lovely calendars, being such photogenic creatures :-) I recall seeing otters play at the San Diego Zoo – they seem endlessly active.

Hey Blue Pixel – where’ve you been? Not on P27!

Uphilldowndale otters are great to watch! Polar bears are not an animal which should be kept in a zoo.
Bats and wrens are a bit different, and watching from the comfort of home does appeal, especially at this time of year.

Mas as you say otters are wonderful creatures. I didn’t know that they are smelly, but suppose I should have realised!

Daffy it’s good to have some wildlife programmes to watch as it’s been a bit sparse lately.
I suppose that polar bears are like that as they have to conserve so much energy most of the time. The way things are going I’m not so sure I’d want to be one! xx

Blue Pixel hello! Good to see that you’re still around, even if you’re not blogging. Your link goes to Platform21 rather than 27 by the way!
Otters may be show offs but they’re still very impressive!

Nikki they are both very photogenic, which obviously helps with their popularity. You were lucky to see them play as all too often they remain unsighted!

Hands up – how many remember “Tarka the Otter” and “Ring of Bright Water”???

They put otters into the favourite list for a couple of generations of children at least.

Olivia I certainly do! I think that thanks to books, films and toys some animals have always been favourites. xx

Hi Flighty, please give us a short review of these programmes if you can, I very much doubt if I will get to see them. I am pleased you like my violent veg, I wasn’t sure how everyone would react to this post, but everyone who commented seemed to like them, glad you did too. x

Louise I shall watch the first but the second may be a bit hit and miss. Anyway I’ll do a review, of sorts, next week.
That entry of yours is perfectly okay, and I’d be surprised if anyone took offence at it. xx
